Help for Hagrid

I want you to meet Hagrid. He came into my life in October of 2019 when his owner was unable to care for him anymore. Hagrid was a great comfort during the lockdown phase of the pandemic and I have bonded with him and he has become the sun and song of my heart.

As an older kitty with an unstable past, Hagrid has some persistent health challenges. A few months ago he needed four teeth removed and a cleaning to address his dental disease. He’s eating great now! We have also been working with his vet on a persistent ear infection.

After several months of traditional ear infection treatments, my little man is still experiencing pain, discomfort, and possible complications that put him at risk. We have now been referred to a specialist. Due to the severity of Hagrid’s infection, the specialist is suggesting a CT scan which will require anesthesia, and if the CT scan deems it safe, he will have a video otoscopy. This allows visualization of the ear canal lining and eardrum. Through the video-otoscopy, we are also able to flush and suction the exudate from the external and middle ear (if indicated) to allow topical medications to work better. If a polyp is present, we can often remove this using video-otoscopy. There are times when the CT shows that doing a video-otoscopy is not safe due to severe middle ear disease or a large, well adhered growth.

While Hagrid is otherwise healthy, I hate seeing him in so much discomfort and the possibility of any infection reaching his brain is heart-wrenching.
