#DylanStrong - Battling Stage IV Colorectal Cancer

Hi, My name is Melissa Johnson-Cooney. I manage the TELUS/KOODO location in Orillia. Recently, two people very important and close to me received an earthshattering diagnosis. Stage IV Colorectal Cancer at 39 years young.

On July 2nd, 2024, Dylan & Alexandria's (newlyweds in their late 30s) lives took a dramatic turn. Dylan was involved in a serious car accident, and while we were relieved that he walked away unharmed, we had no idea that a much more devastating discovery was waiting.

Initial scans from that day at the hospital led to tests and biopsies. Doctors found something we never expected—stage 4 colorectal cancer that had already spread to his right lung and abdomen. He is facing an uphill battle with intertwined masses that make surgery impossible. The cancer is terminal.

In the months since, Dylan has undergone several rounds of intense chemotherapy and targeted treatments as we face this fight head-on. His journey has been complicated by severe infections requiring hospitalizations and a permanent abdominal drain. Alexandria, his wife, has stepped in as his caregiver, learning to manage his drain and administer IV antibiotics to limit hospital visits. While the chemotherapy itself is covered by Canada’s healthcare system, the many other costs are not—constant medical appointments, missed work, and the overwhelming expenses associated with end-of-life care. The financial strain is becoming much more difficult to manage.

Together, Dylan and Alexandria want to focus on creating meaningful moments and celebrating the life they’ve shared over the last decade without being burdened by financial worries.
