DYBPs Fight For Social Justice

“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” – Malcolm X

From August 5, 2014, the day John Crawford, III, who was wrongfully killed by police who mistook a toy BB gun for an automatic weapon to May 25, 2020 when George Floyd was viciously murdered by four cops for an alleged forgery, there has been a slowly rising cry for justice in America for blacks.

Events across America have brought to the forefront the broader issues of injustice and the systemic racism that has long dogged the black community. The national consciousness is truly awakening to the harsh realities that blacks have suffered for generations, dating back over 400 years to slavery and extensive oppression, even in present times.

As racial injustice has no place in our society, it's time to come together, keep this important conversation going, and help enact real change. We protest today but we must prepare for tomorrow.

It is with this in mind that The Dayton Young Black Professionals (DYBP) have outlined a 12 month action plan rooted in two of our seven pillars of excellence - Politics and Justice and Community service.

The plan is as follows:

Immediate Action – starting now:

Host a monthly community conversation series inspired by Ed Gordon’s book “Conversations in Black.” Each month we will share one of Gordon’s prompts to jump start our conversation. The first conversation is tentatively scheduled for June 30, 2020 at 6:30pm. A complimentary copy of the book will be available for up to 100 people who cannot afford to purchase a book.

Launch an Annual Community Give Back Day prior to the start of the school year in memory of John Crawford, III, who was killed in August of 2014. On this day we will remember this tragic event honoring his memory through a community giveaway of school uniforms, supplies and snacks for summer and afterschool programs for up to 100 elementary students (2 times a year - August and January) and $1,000 scholarships and a laptop to 10 first generation college student who live in West Dayton who plan to start college Fall 2020.

Long-term Action – the long game:

Establish the Leadership Institute for Young Black Leaders of Dayton - this six month intensive led and taught by black thought leaders, educators and activists will position 30 young African Americans living in Dayton to purse political office at the local, State and federal level, to serve on for profit and nonprofit boards and to leverage their dollars to rebuild their community. Additionally program graduates will serve on the Social Justice Committee of DYBP, a newly formed oversight group whose focus is to advocate, educate and led initiatives that ensure the constitutional rights of black and brown people are enforced by those elected to do so.

The projected cost to implement each initiative is $52,900 broken down as follows:

-Conversations In Black – 100 books (@ est. $17/book) and snacks for 12 monthly sessions (@$100 per session) = $2,900.00-

-Semi Annual Community Give Back Days – Uniform, school supplies and snacks for 100 students (@ $150 per student) and $1,000 scholarship and laptop for 10 first year college students (@ $1,500) = $30,000.00

-Leadership Institute for Young Black Leader of Dayton – cost covers speaker and facilitator fees, program related materials, transportation for field trips and memberships for two years to the Dayton Young Black Professionals for 30 participants and an institutional membership to the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce (@ $600 per student) = $20,000.00

Donations of $25, $50, $100 or any amount will be helpful towards reaching our goal of $52,900 and we ask that you share this fundraiser with family and friends. Thank you for ALL of your support so far.

Any funds raised in excess of the goal will be used to extend more assistance to DYBP social justice programs.
