Giving Back to the Ward That’s Helped Us
Just a couple of weeks after our wedding, Ashley was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer with liver metastases at the age of 34. It’s been a tough journey, but the team at Stoke Mandeville Hospital has been incredible. From starting treatment with Pembrolizumab to the ongoing care and support, they’ve made an overwhelming time a little easier.
We’ve spent a lot of time on the ward, and while the care has been amazing, we’ve noticed a few little things that could make the experience more comfortable like replacing some worn out chairs or swapping out the old magazines for new ones as many people go to these treatments alone and spend several hours reading outdated/worn out books/magazine. As a younger couple, we’d love to explore ways to make the ward feel more comfortable and engaging for younger people going through treatment, whether that’s with more age appropriate entertainment or just little touches that help pass the time. It’s the small comforts that can make a big difference when you’re spending hours there.
We’re hoping to raise some money to give back, not by just handing over a cheque, but by asking the ward staff what they really need and helping out where we can. It’s our way of saying thank you and making things a bit more comfortable for others going through the same journey.
If you’d like to help, we’d be so grateful. Every little bit will go towards making the wards and hospitals that have helped our Ashley get better become a more comfortable and equipped place for everyone.
