Derek is a dedicated, hardworking husband and father of two. He has carried the load while his wife and both kids struggle with profound medical issues. Until now, Derek has been relatively healthy. But epileptic-type symptoms has led to a diagnosis of brain cavernomas that require immediate surgery. Cavernomas are clusters of abnormal blood vessels that can occur anywhere in the body. Derek has two in the temporal lobe of his brain, and they are bleeding. This surgery will take place Monday, November 16th.

Because they have reached the out-of-pocket maximum on their health insurance this year, the surgery will be covered completely. However, Derek will be required to miss about three weeks of work without pay while he recovers, a loss of income they cannot cover without help. There will also be travel costs associated with the surgery and follow-up visits. Any funds donated will be used to replace the lost income to cover the family's basic needs.
