The Chippenham Challenge 2024 – Raising Awareness of Type 1 Diabetes

170 miles, 6 cyclists, 2 days… 1 team!

My name’s Shona Rutherford, and a massive thank you for taking a few moments to read about the Chippenham Challenge.

Anyone who’s been diagnosed with, or lives with a family member or friend with Type 1 diabetes, will recognise the endless finger prick tests, injections, highs, lows, sleepless nights and disrupted days that are common place following diagnosis. However, with careful planning we can all make the most of life, embracing and encouraging the use of technology available to help with living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Everyone can live their lives to the fullest!

The Chippenham Challenge is a bike ride from Chippenham Sports Club in Wiltshire to Chippenham Cricket Club in Cambridgeshire. The two clubs are often confused with one another due to their name, however their locations are approximately 170 miles apart on a cyclist’s route.

Myself, Greg Hooley, Mark Hooley, Liam Ward, Richard Ward and Will Tate are taking part in the challenge which starts at Chippenham Sports Club (Wiltshire). Our route will take us through a variety of roads and recognised cycle routes as we cycle our way through the countryside in Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire. Our journey will take 2 days and we will cover approximately 85 miles each day, so roughly 7-8 hours in the saddle each day!

We’re raising funds for JDRF (the leading global type 1 diabetes charity) and Chippenham Cricket Club, our local Cricket Club who have supported a number of T1Ds (including Sophie Hughes, Liam Ward and myself) through their T1D journey and have encouraged them to embrace sport at the highest level.
