Close the Digital Divide

Laptops For Kids website

Laptops for Kids is a charitable organisation that facilitates the donation and repurposing of used digital devices, enabling children from disadvantaged backgrounds to have access to the technology they need to participate in remote learning.
Companies, big and small, have pledged to donate old computers that have been sat at the back of the office.

These will be given to the city’s disadvantaged young people, free of charge, enabling them to do the schoolwork they couldn’t do without a computer.

£200 Buys 1 refurbished laptop
£10 Buys 1 household an LTE dongle (for free internet into their home)

Our Purpose - Why we do it.

We believe that all children should have access to the equipment and technology they need to succeed in their education.

Our Unique Process. - How we do it.

By bringing together a group of like-minded organisations, each providing unique expertise at different stages of the process, we are able to provide an end-to-end solution that supports in closing the digital divide.

Our Solution - What we do.

We invite businesses and individuals to donate used digital devices for repurposing and then distribute these devices to children from disadvantaged backgrounds, giving them the opportunity to learn remotely.

Our Mission

Thousands and thousands of young people in Sheffield are falling further behind with their education because they cannot access the internet at home. We need your help to close this digital divide by donating unused devices to our Laptops for Kids campaign.

We want to ensure that every child gets safe access to the internet so they can fulfil their educational potential. In a time of national crisis, the public and private sectors in Sheffield have come together to solve this problem.

Launched by The Star  and WANdisco, we are supported by leading lights from Sheffield’s business and civic community. We need your donations to close the digital divide.

Our Story

Digital poverty is no new issue and with the role of technology in education growing, so is the digital divide. When the Covid pandemic struck, the UK went into lockdown, forcing schools across the country to adapt their teaching and take to digital remote learning.
Thousands of young people across the country were left behind without safe access to the internet at home. We passionately believe that every child deserves an equal opportunity to education and access to the tools they need to succeed. With the digital divide now more prevalent than ever, we saw first hand the struggles some families were facing and with little government support on offer we knew we had to help in any way we could.

How it works:

To make a donation, business, organisations and individuals should contact [email redacted] and arrange collection.

We want laptops, tablets, desktops and chargers.

Donors can securely erase devices themselves. Alternatively, we can arrange for the certified secure erasure of devices.

Students at the WANdisco Data Academy at The Sheffield City College are securely erasing devices under the guidance of IT experts.

They are using licenses and certification donated by data security expert Blancco in support of our campaign.

After making contact via email, donors can take devices to locations in central Sheffield including the Cutlers’ Hall, Twinkl and Learn Sheffield.

Learn Sheffield, part of the council, is distributing certified erased devices to schools, according to need.

Natterhub is providing access to digital literacy and safety content.
