Dental Mission to Jewish Village

After sifting through Mission Trips for years, no opportunity felt like the right one for me. I was tired of passively waiting for the right opportunity. Instead, I decided to create my own opportunity. I wanted to address oral health needs for the underpriviledged in a place that I could connect with. It took almost 2 years of researching and communicating, but with the help of Dr. David Abramowitz, I finally have gotten involved with that mission! From July 24th - August 6th, I will be traveling to Mbale, Uganda to give free dental care to the Jewish Abayudaya community on my first mission trip!
Under Dr. Abramowitz's supervision, I will spend 2 weeks providing free restorative dental care to the needy Abayudayans. From children to grandparents, the oral health needs are extensive but the access to care is scarce. For many, this service is their only opportunity to address their dental needs.
Why did this village stand out to me? Among a needy continent that notoriously lacks Jewish presence, this village stays true to their Jewish beliefs. Their ability to remain true to themselves and their religion in the face of adversity inspires me. As an American-Jew, I hope to connect with African-Jews on a special, spiritual level. Being Jewish is a big part of my make-up and I look forward to sharing my Jewish culture with them, learning from their practices, and growing as a Jew.
The money will be used for flights, transportation, lodging, supplies, medical insurance, vaccinations, a visa and food for 10 days. The money must be raised before the trip. This experience will provide free dentistry to needy Jews in Africa and I expect to gain a new appreciation for two of my passions - Judaism and Dentistry. This trip is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I will be forever grateful for anyone who supports me.
