I am creating this page on behalf of my dad, Dr. Carlos Omenaca, who started what is known as the DUNI project 10 years ago under the Order of Malta. Our mission is to improve health care and access to health education for the Arhuaco and Kogi Indigenous tribes in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, Colombia.
As a background, this is what we have accomplished over the past 10 years:
- Constructed and furnished a healthcare post in the community centre (Bunkwimake) at which some 1,400 indigenous people have received care
- Installed a solar energy system for maintenance of the healthcare post
- Established a new water supply for the healthcare post that also provides for a portion of Bunkwimake
- Carried out about twice yearly medical missions
- Provided rapid testing for global and endemic diseases (i.e. Chagas, hepatitis, H. pylori, influenza)
- Installed internet service to mediate telemedicine
- Established a DUNI educational scholarship program through which two indigenous individuals are currently being sponsored through nursing school to support the healthcare post in the long run
We ask for your financial support to continue serving these indigenous communities more effectively. We are using the funds from this GoFundMe to construct a lodging for the healthcare workers and volunteers, as well as a short-stay hospitalization room. We really appreciate your contributions. DUNI means "thank you" in the Arhuaco language; so DUNI to all that have made these missions possible throughout the years!
