DUB Pies Employees (COVID-19)

Donation protected

Dear friends,

Due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, Dub Pies' Pie Shop is closed for the foreseeable. We want to take care of our employees one last time, and we know many of you are asking how you can help.

Please read on...

Dub Pies was founded in 2003 by Gareth Hughes from a desire to bring comfort food and great coffee to a New York healing from 9/11. Our Windsor Terrace cafe, The Pie Shop, opened in 2008 and has been open every single day since then.

Until now.  Covid-19 is an acute challenge that we, like many other small businesses, may not be able to beat, so we have no option but to close for the foreseeable.

We have traded through the global financial crisis, through hurricanes, superstorms and blizzards (when trains weren't running and our amazing staff had to trudge through thigh-deep snow to get to work). We've been there through gentrification and rent rises, and through many more small business challenges. And it's all been because of the love and support of our neighborhood and visitors and customers far and wide.

It's heartbreaking to not be there for our incredible neighbors just when you need us the most. We know that our little corner of the world has been a place of community and connection for so many of you. We've seen great friendships, collaborations and community initiatives start over coffee and conversation in our shop. We've watched relationships form, we've loved seeing your kids grow. We've enjoyed supporting local artists by giving them jobs and putting their art on our walls. We're proud to have been able to quietly help neighbors in great need.

We know this loss will be felt keenly; we're feeling it, too. We are so grateful to you all for your support and patronage. Time will tell if there's a future for Dub Pies beyond this crisis — but right now, our biggest concern is the welfare of our amazing staff.

These beautiful humans, who have become friends to so many of you and served our community so well, will now be spread across Brooklyn in a state of unemployment, with bills racking up and no clear understanding of what relief will be available to them — if any.

We know many of you are asking how you can help. In the immediate term, any donation you could contribute here means just a little more time that our staff can keep the wolf from the door. Next, they will need jobs, and we can vouch for every single one of them.

Given how many people are in need right now, you all have huge hearts just considering this request.

Our Dub Pies Facebook and Instagram  pages are open for those who would like a place to share photos and memories — let's keep our little corner of PPW and 16th Street alive online through this pandemic.

Thank you so much, for everything. It's been an unbelievable ride. Perhaps we'll share a pie and coffee on the other side, some day, somehow.

*This was written by Gareth Hughes. Until June 2020 the cafe manager, Samuel Flax, administered this GoFundMe.  From that point Gareth took over as Samuel had found new employment. 100% of funds raised will go to our cafe staff and the kitchen production team.*

P.S. If somebody could keep watering the roses, we'd be so grateful.
