Montana Roots Recovery Fund

Donation protected
We are raising funds for the farm Montana Roots. On June 13, 2022, Montana’s communities were hit hard when the Yellowstone River overflowed its banks and flooded homes and businesses. Montana Roots, a small Livingston aquaponics farm run by the young Mascari family, was inundated with knee-high river water and mud.

Montana Roots’ structures sustained heavy damage and will need extensive cleanup and repairs. Immediate expenses include rental of a skid steer to remove debris and displaced soil; building materials to repair structures; buying new seeds, farm materials and fridges; repairs to electrical/heating systems; and help covering costs during a lapse in production.

Montana Roots is a Livingston gem that needs our help to continue to provide fresh greens to local restaurants and stores. In addition to growing wonderful food, Montana Roots gives back to the community through its associated non-profit, Root Down, which teaches sustainable farming and outdoor skills to local youth. The Roots crew is beloved by the students they work with for their humor, charm and enthusiastic dedication to teaching Montanans to grow fresh food year-round. MTR hosts classes and internships for Montana State University and has designed and built two aquaponics systems at Sleeping Giant Middle School and Park High. MTR also hires local high school students, providing meaningful job experience in sustainable agriculture. MTR is committed to sustainability, is solar-powered, and has used compostable packaging since day one.

Sam Mascari is a young, first-time business owner who, alongside his greenhouse manager Sophie Koopmeiners, his wife Mary, and many other community members, has worked tirelessly since 2012 to grow this small farm into a local household name.

Unfortunately, their business insurance does not cover flooding. FEMA assistance may be forthcoming eventually, in the form of loans that will need to be paid off. If you are able to, please consider helping Montana Roots so that they can stay on their feet, rebuild, and continue to serve the community they love. If funding exceeds repair costs, they will use it to improve their operations and grow more food.

Montana Roots appreciates your continued love and support. THANK YOU!!
