hello,
On Tuesday 2nd November 2021 at 2:30 am my sister Andrea passed away, she passed away in hospital very suddenly. Andrea was 32 years old and severely disabled, she had illnesses such as epilepsy, cerebral palsy, blind, behavioural problems, brain age of a 3-year-old and hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain).
she suffered from pneumonia very regularly (at least 8 or 9 times a year)
she spent at least 3 months in hospital every year.
she had a feeding tube in her stomach called a PEG tube, we used to have a nurse come to our home every week to change the balloon that keeps it in the stomach and rotates it to ensure it is working correctly.
on Saturday the nurse came out as usual and changed the water in the balloon, instead of putting the water in the balloon before rotating the tube she rotated the tube without the balloon filled which caused the PEG tube to fall out of her stomach completely.
the nurse then tried about 10 times to push the tube back into her stomach, she repeatedly pushed the tube back in with force and when she realised she could not do it she said she needed the stopper (which is a smaller tube that keeps the hole open)
it took the nurse 5 minutes to push the stopper in as she kept pushing the stopper in very hard until it went it.
after placing the stopper in she explained that she wasn't going to try and put the PEG tube in as she does not know how to do it as she has not been trained in it. (after she tried continuously to stab and push the tube back in)
Andrea started heaving a being sick on Sunday but we were told by the nurse not to take her to the hospital as it would be wasting their time, I questioned this and she stated that she was a medical professional and she is telling me not to.
on Monday another nurse came out and placed the new tube in and Andrea was fine, she was eating, drinking and very happy.
Monday night at 12 am my dad bought Andrea into the living room and said she had been sick and suddenly her skin was very grey and she could not keep her head up, we phoned the ambulance and put her in the recovery position.
the ambulance took 25 minutes to come, during these 25 minutes Andreas skin became so grey it was transparent, her lips were white and her hands and feet were blue, her breathing became so hard and staggered.
she then started being sick but without heaving, it was coming out of her nose and mouth!
when the paramedics came It took 10 minutes to stabilise her enough to get her to the ambulance, she was blue lighted to hospital.
she was taken to the cardiology ward as her heart rate was dropping badly, she had a defibrillator on and the doctors were trying to start her heart for an hour.
at 2:30 am she was pronounced dead.
Andrea died of unknown circumstances and we are awaiting a postmortem.
the nurse that repeatedly tried to place the tube in even though she was not qualified and did not know how to do it.
The nurse carried on trying to place the tube into Andreas stomach even though she knew she didn't know how to do it and instead of stopping, her mistake May of killed my sister.
Andreas death was so unexpected and so sudden we have now got to get the money to pay for her funeral, she was not insured as her illnesses were so complex no insurer would work with us.
if you could help us even a little bit we would be so grateful!
Andrea was such an amazing, beautiful soul and her passing has left a hole in our family that will never be filled <3
