All who know our girl, Donna Rae Gibbs, know she’s a fabulous woman. She’s a positive, empathetic, selfless friend who lights up any room with her laughter and sharp wit. She can turn any amount of lemons into lemonade and is someone who will always have your back. She’s honest, sees the good in every situation and gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. She’s wicked smart, funny as hell, is a rock star of a mom and has a joie de vivre second to none.
We’ve hit a bump in the road, folks. A pretty significant bump, but a bump, nonetheless. DR has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Everything has been moving pretty quickly since her diagnosis and she’s scheduled for a single mastectomy in the next few weeks. While the prognosis is positive, there is no way of knowing the full scope of the cancer or the path of treatment needed until the surgery is over.
Unfortunately, a portion of the surgery required to get DR back on her feet isn’t covered by New Brunswick healthcare. Maddening as that is, it’s a reality she’s now facing along with having to process her cancer diagnosis very quickly. There will be a first surgery to remove her breast and a number of lymph nodes, and multiple surgeries required to reconstruct. There will be periods of physical and mental recovery needed after each surgery, and while this could be a long road of recovery, financial worry shouldn’t be added to that.
