So how’s your week going????
Today we are mentally exhausted from the thieves who hacked our site. They got us good. Everything looked good on our end going as planned. These guys got into our email and in turn got into our Shopify. When they got into the site, they changed the routing number to go into three separate investment companies, not banks. Basically making it harder to track all our money down. Banks would have been much easier to deal with.
We would normally get notifications on any change but didn’t because they had control of our email and intercepted all correspondence before we could see them.
Yesterday we went to the bank to make a transfer so we could pay all our bills and enjoy the holiday off and rest…but instead, the teller said the account balance is ZERO. Couldn’t possibly be ZERO. We got instantly sick to our stomachs and raced home to check the site. Clicked on the payouts and they were going to JP Morgan , Coastal Community, and some company called Asperations. These mfrs have been bleeding us dry since December 1st. Now it’s the end of the month and its time to pay bills and the money to pay them isnt there.
We have set up our system to get dumped into a separate bank account with no outside contact to it via cards nor online banking. This eliminates (we thought) any hackers from getting in. We physically go to the bank to transfer that account money at the teller because we didn’t feel comfortable allowing such large amounts being transferred online. Changing the routing numbers on the site was the only way the money could be stolen and by intercepting the emails, we had no idea it was being changed. Nothing was flagged, and nobody notified is.
As of a few hours ago we have our site back under our control but now there is $25k still in limbo they just won’t return and are making us jump through hoops to get it back plus now the police will have to be involved about this theft since it’s such a large amount of stolen money. $25k of our VERY hard earned money has been transferred and deposited in some dirt bags account who thought it was better to steal from a blue collar business than to go work a real job.
This $25k isn’t fun money for us, this the cost of shipping, labor, merchandise, boxes and other materials so our customers can get what they want this Christmas. We are still on the hook for owing all this. As small business owners this stinks.
What makes it even sweeter it’s at Christmas time. I don’t know about you but my Christmas is trashed right now and I want someone’s head on a platter
We’ve been told it’s more likely than not that the FBI will be involved in this matter as well because of the large amount money involved. This is way past petty theft. This is federal crime now
We have personally requested all elements of the paper trail to these thieves to be given to us. They are obligated to do so and they have agreed to hand over all of their information so that in addition to them, we can contact state authorities as well.
This was day 2 of bullshit, fear, relentless crying, punching walls, and just begging Shopify to release our money back to us. But they’ve yet to do that. We are hoping tomorrow they will. Being at someone’s mercy is not something we do well with.
UPDATE FROM JOHN
Business owners ……….I suggest if you have your site through SHOPIFY, change your passwords monthly as well as make sure your deposits aren’t being redirected to another account. Check them daily because SHOPIFY claims they are not liable for stolen passwords on your accounts. This is the only way a hacker can steal the money and get away with it leaving you holding the bag. These hackers got 25k of our money before we knew what hit us .
