My son, Drew Shelton, suffered a traumatic brain injury as a passenger in a one car accident in February of 2008.  The driver died.  We have taken care of him at home ever since. Drew does not walk, talk or move much at all and he has a feeding tube. He requires daily suctioning and has seizures a couple of times a month.  He does, thankfully, understand what is going on around him and eye blinks yes and no.  Drew requires care around the clock and we get nursing through a home health agency.   However, since Covid, home health agencies cannot compete with the  amount of money being paid to nurses at hospitals and nursing homes.  We need a nurse five days a week but only have one two days a week at this time.  Our two day a week nurse shows me the ads she gets several times a week  offering her jobs at $15.00 and $20.00 more per hour than she  makes and offering sign-on bonuses.  When the agency does not provide nurses, we have to pay out of pocket so that we can work. I work full time and my husband works on commission.  We desperately need funds to pay nurses that we can find that won't work through the agency because of the low pay.  We are hopeful that when nursing pay in our area goes back to normal, the home health agencies can be competitive again.  I have also used CNAs (certified nursing assistant)s to help during this time, but the nursing agencies will not pay for CNAs since Drew really requires nursing care.  We also pay for physical therapy because insurance will not pay for that and we  pay for many of Drew's supplies because insurance does not cover the items or the suppliers can not seem to find things such as gloves since Covid.
