Dressing Room for Drama Students

Donation protected
My daughter, Olivia Prieto, is a 6th grade Drama student at a performing arts magnet middle school, in Miami, Florida. This amazing arts-magnet school has been in the South Miami  for 60 years, and is a leader at educating talented artists, in the dramatic arts, dance, music, fine arts, voice and broadcasting arenas!  As a former Thespian myself, I asked the Drama Magnet Teacher to give me a tour of the theatre’s dressing room (also known as the “Green Room”, which is the HEART ❤️  of a theatre), during a recent open-house tour, I attended; I was shocked by what I saw. The teacher opened the doors to reveal a blank slate of a room; a rectangular space with old  linoleum floors, stained ceiling tiles and chipped, broken walls (see attached photos). This dressing room, lacked the basic tables, mirrors and chairs needed for young performers to sit and transform into their pre-performance  character.

For the 18 years that this Drama teacher has been instructing Dramatic Arts at this school, the theatre has been using this  dismal, uninspired space for the 6th, 7th and 8th grade students to prepare for performances.

As as a parent and avid lover of the Dramatic Arts, I have taken it upon myself to spearhead this fundraiser, in an effort to give these talented and. creative students an opportunity to experience a dressing room that they deserve!! I invited a well-respected carpenter to visit the school, and give us a formal estimate . This estimate includes the custom counter space, shelving and mirrors for the space. This estimate does not include new flooring, lighting, paint, chairs and decor to compete the space.   I hope to surpass our goal, and donate to the Drama Classroom’s Mainstage Player Fund, to repair other needed items within the theatre-magnet program, such: 1. A major repair of the main theatre’s black curtain, which is ripped and damaged in several areas. 2. The Theatre classroom is the largest classroom in Dade County, and althoug this space has a stage area, it is void of a curtain and the necessary metal framing needed to support a curtain, as well as theatrical lights. Whatever funds remain will go towards the purchase of industrial metal shelving for the classroom, which will organize the space and create a clean, professional looking environment. If you know about “life in a theatre”, you know that custumes and props take up a GREAT DEAL of space! The classroom’s current “storage situation” is an organizational mess which, in my opinion, compromises the integrity of the costumes and props which should be stored in a proper place.

PLEASE help my daughter Olivia and her classmates raise these funds! We will present the FINAL check to the Drama Magent Teacher, along with a letter detailing what I’ve stated above. This letter will detail where the raised funds need to be allocated, after the dressing room project is, hopefully, complete!  I thank you SO VERY MUCH, in advance, for helping these young Thespians create the change they WANT TO SEE! Sending you many many blessings... THANK YOU for your donation. ❤️
