Cuddle Cots in Memory of Dalun

Donation protected
On April 21, Brady and Erin Wood welcomed a baby boy. Due to labor complications and being without a heartbeat and oxygen for almost 20 minutes, Dalun suffered from Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy meaning being without oxygen caused extensive brain damage. Through the generous care of the nurses and doctors at Mercy Anderson, Dalun was stable enough to be transferred to Cincinnati Children's Hospital where he could get the care he needed. Dalun lived a total of 12 days.

Though Dalun passed away too soon, his legacy still remains. Brady and Erin have decided to raise funds for two Cuddle Cots, one for The Family Birthing Center at Mercy Anderson, the hospital where Dalun was born, and one for StarShine, the children's hospice program that made it possible to bring Dalun home and be surrounded by his loved ones.

A Cuddle Cot is small, light and quiet and is designed for use with deceased babies in any moses basket or cot. It can easily be carried in one hand and so can easily be used at home for parents as well as for use within the hospital maternity department. The manufacturers of the Cuddle Cot state, "Dealing with the death of a baby is clearly an incredibly difficult event for parents and bereaved parents should be given the option of spending Time with their baby. Providing families Time through the use of the CuddleCot is internationally encouraged by midwives, bereavement practitioners, still birth/neonatal charities, and academics. Time allows the family to form an important bond with their baby; whether changing a nappy, dressing the baby, taking photographs or simply just staying close and this unquestionably helps families in dealing with their loss. The problem is that in a warm room the baby’s condition can deteriorate quickly, therefore cooling the baby is absolutely essential. Transferring to and from the morgue is now widely regarded as an outdated practice as it is traumatic for parents to repeatedly go through the separation process whereas the CuddleCot allows the family to spend every moment with their baby, precious moments where every minute counts."

Brady and Erin hope to give the gift of time to other families who will unfortunately experience the loss of their child whether through stillbirth, death after delivery, or due to illness.

We will be fundraising for the next nine and a half months to reach our goal. This will look differently throughout the campaign. We plan to fundraise through pop-up parties (Pampered Chef, Jamberry, etc.), T-shirt orders, bracelets, bake sales, and many other ideas. The ultimate goal is to donate the Cuddle Cots to the units by April 21, 2017, Dalun's first birthday.

This cause means so much to Brady and Erin because of the endless love and support they were given through the staff and resources of Mercy and StarShine. They hope to give back that love and carry Dalun's legacy on every time a Cuddle Cot may need to be used.

We thank you so much for your donation and cannot wait to give the gift of time, when time and memories are all that matters to loss parents.
