Dream Catcher: Animated Short Film
Donation protected
My name is Ryan Adkins, a 25-year-old graduate student at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) pursuing my Masters in Fine Arts in Animation in Atlanta, GA. I have been in Atlanta since 2009 for school, receiving my undergraduate degree in Literature, Media & Communications from Georgia Tech, the alma mater of both of my parents. Since 2012, I have started my own digital art company entitled iLLUSiONÀGE Productions, interned for Cartoon Network as a creative writer, and interned for The Virtual Reality Company as a pre-production assistant, among other smaller projects. I am also the author and illustrator of two published books entitled 'Dream Catcher' - a childrens' picture book - and 'The Lost Art' - a pre-teen novel.
So now that the formal introduction is out of the way, I would like to share with you why I'm here. I am here to garner support in funding an animated short film project inspired by my children's book 'Dream Catcher'. It is the story of a six-year-old boy’s escape from loneliness into a wonderfully imaginative world of dreams with nothing more than a dream catcher and his imagination. It is a charming story that underscores the importance for children to chase their dreams, let their imaginations roam, and cherish being their unique selves. The campaign funds will go towards supporting the team of artists on the project, film festival entry registrations, process book creation, and other production costs.
So if you’re still with me at this point, I would now like to share with you why telling this story means so much to me. Growing up, it was difficult to hold onto too many things with all of the moving my family did over the years. I always felt like "the new kid", never having those life-long friendships from childhood that so many other kids had to hold onto. I was also no stranger to being the only minority kid in the class since, well, as far back as I can remember and growing up as an introvert didn't help things either. I realized at a very early age that I was different and at many times in my life, my imagination was the only thing I had to keep me company. It just became so natural to want to escape the pressure of feeling different and just lose myself in the realms of my own imagination, a place where I could be comfortable with who I was and be anything I dared to be. Maybe this wasn’t your story, or even the story of someone you knew, but what I do know is how it feels to be that kid. To feel overlooked. To feel alone even when surrounded by others. To feel different. It is my sincerest wish that this film will touch the hearts and inspire the minds of both children and children-at-heart to dare to be different and relentlessly chase after their dreams. I thank you for taking the time to consider my campaign and for helping me to bring this world of dreams into reality!
