By 2050, there will be a tonne of plastic for every tonne of fish in our oceans (World Economic Forum Report).
Less than 10% of all Canadian plastic actually gets recycled (Environment and Climate Change Canada Report).
Who are we?
We (Maxwell and Adam) are 4th year business students graduating in May from St. Francis Xavier University (St.FX) in Nova Scotia, Canada. As a team, we are passionate about environmental sustainability and plastic waste reduction and we believe that radical changes are necessary to address the plastic waste crisis we all face.
What is the problem?
Within our university, which consists of about 6,000 people, over a million pounds of waste is produced every year. Sadly, a very large majority of that waste consists of contaminated plastic that is not recycled. And plastic thrown into garbage bins is sent directly to the landfill.
What is our story?
In 2019, we were given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to study abroad in Ghana, West Africa and participate in a social justice internship. While there, we discovered a unique alternative to traditional recycling and were amazed by the significant impact it has had in addressing Ghana's plastic crisis. Today, we are inspired to bring the same solution to St.FX University and the town of Antigonish.
What is our solution?
Our mission is to use the technology we discovered in Ghana to reduce waste right here in Antigonish, by collecting plastic before it enters the landfill and repurposing it. We will be building and operating three semi-industrial machines on the St.FX University campus that can transform clean plastic into practical and beautiful products. Some examples of these unique items are kitchen utensils, drinkware, laptop/phone cases, and building materials.
How can you help?
By donating, you will provide us with the funds necessary to purchase and build these amazing machines. St.FX University has been our home for four years, and now we want to give back to our community and the environment that we so heavily rely on. Please help us in making this project a reality so that we can #recyclewithapurpose.
Below is a video that summarizes the plastic transformation process, provided by Precious Plastic.
It takes all of us to make a difference. Let’s #recyclewithapurpose, together.
Thank you!
