This Go Fund Me fundraiser has been started to raise funds to rebuild some of the main buildings of Drasa Avenue School (DAS) in Lautoka Fiji; in particular the school's Library. However the Library is attached to the main school building shown on the fundraiser's cover photo. Asian Subterranean Termite (AST) damage has occurred and is not just limited to the Library; and the extent of work needed cannot yet be ascertained without demolition prior to building.
The Drasa Avenue School Rebuilding fundraiser was started for and on behalf of the school and its Parents and Teachers Association (PTA), by the FaceBook group "Fiji Kids". Please join us who are ex-students of Drasa Avenue School to raise funds to build a new Library and carry out the works that are needed to repair the damage.
If the funds raised are in excess of that which is needed for the immediate rebuilding work, those remaining funds will be used under the management of the DAS PTA for Library content and computers. 'Fiji Kids' will monitor and scrutinise the expenditure of all funds raised to ensure transparency and honest use of the funds.
Drasa Avenue School was built early 20th Century to cater for the schooling needs of Lautoka Mill workers' children predominantly from Australia. As such it was originally called Lautoka European School (LES). As time went on it became evident that the same needs existed for local Mill workers' children and others in the community (local and expat) who subsequently attended the school. This led to the change of the school's name to Drasa Avenue School (DAS), which most of us ex-students remember it as. The school has always been held in high regard and is still to this day considered a school that holds exemplary academic standards. However the buildings used are mostly still the same timber buildings built in the early 20th century. Termites have recently (C. 2009) entered Fiji; and the school buildings have been decimated by them.
