Drake's Heart Needs Urgent Care
Donation protected
Hello! This is Drake. Drake is a 9-week-old Black Lab. Recently, Drake has developed a severe cough. After a visit with the vet, Drake was given some bad news. He has an enlarged heart, and this has led to other complications. Drake has also been diagnosed with Patent Ductus Arteriosus or PDA. PDA is a congenital heart defect in puppies that occurs when the ductus arteriosus doesn't close properly at birth. The PDA then causes problems between the blood flow of the heart and lungs. This is resulting in fluid building up in his lungs (causing the cough). If left untreated, Drake has about a year left to live. Eventually, his heart will overwork itself until he passes out and will not wake up. However, there is a surgery that can save his life. Drake needs to have a PDA Occlusion Procedure. The doctors will make a small incision and insert a specialized catheter. The catheter will be placed into the femoral artery and then the PDA. Then the catheter will be used to prevent blood flow through the vessel. This procedure is a curative procedure for most dogs if done in time (98%). By having this procedure done, Drake can live the full life of a normal dog. This is where Drake needs your help. Iowa State University is the only location in Iowa that will perform the procedure. The procedure costs anywhere between $2,700-$5,000. Any donation helps. Drake and his family are extremely grateful for any donation.
