Dr. Tahir Husain, our beloved professor, colleague and mentor, peacefully passed away on January 26, 2022 in St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Many of you must have first-hand observed or learned from others that Dr. Tahir Husain has touched many lives. He provided opportunities for higher education and professional career development to many. His students and mentored scholars hold esteemed positions in industry and academia globally.

To continue his legacy of helping the deserving candidates for higher education and professional development, we hope to create Dr. Tahir Husain Memorial Scholarship(s). This scholarship is meant to support graduate student's living expenses and tuition fees during the program. We aim for the scholarship to be established at the Faculty of Engineering & Applied Science, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador), St John's, NL, Canada.

Brief Biography

Dr. Tahir Husain was a highly respected professor of Environmental Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, since 1995. His research and teaching interests were in water and waste management, energy storage, environmental risk assessment, environmental modeling, and technology development.

He received numerous local, national, and international accolades, awards and recognitions during his long and illustrious career. He supervised over 50 graduate students, authored a book on Kuwaiti Oil Fires as well as over 400 research publications, and led more than 80 research and consulting projects worldwide.

Dr. Husain earned a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of British Columbia as a Commonwealth Scholar in 1979. He was a visiting scientist at Harvard School of Public Health in 1995. He worked with the Research Institute at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia for 16 years (1979-95). Dr. Husain also held leadership positions, including Director of Continuing Engineering Education (2002-2005); Chair of Civil Engineering (2005-2007); Director, Executive MBA in Petroleum Studies (2010-2011); and Associate Dean of Research (2014-2017) at Memorial University.

He was passionate about research and teaching and proud of helping his students succeed in their professional careers. Above all, he exemplified generosity, dedication to his family, compassion, encouragement, sincerity, and forgiveness. He served as a role model, mentor and friend to many. He placed emphasis on education as a means to leading a better life.
