After a lifetime of caring for others, Dr. Alan Spurgin needs your help. He has been battling a series of major health issues since May, including congestive heart failure, chronic kidney failure, and leukemia. After seven hospital and rehabilitation stays and 31 medications, his strength is returning.

The medical bills for Al and his wife, Gerane, are a huge challenge because they’ve spent their 47 years of marriage serving others instead of themselves. Together, they’ve raised three children as well as over 110 foster children. 

Many know Al as their beloved teacher. He’s taught all eight grades, including in a one-room school. He has served as athletic director in an urban school and coached as many as seven different sports for elementary age athletes. Dr. Spurgin’s work with children with special needs as well as teaching future teachers about children with disabilities has been his passion for the past 20 years. Al would love to return to the college classroom again someday at Martin Luther College.

We’re hoping that all those to whom Al and Gerane have given so much will show their thanks with donations during this challenging time. They estimate their present need to be about $15,000, but ongoing medical expenses will likely continue. They thank you for any help you can provide.
