Our community suffered a devastating loss when our dear friend, Shuo Zeng, was the victim of a laptop robbery that led to his tragic death. This sad event happened on New Year’s Eve, which was also his 34th birthday.
Friends planned to gather at the New Year’s Eve party that Shuo was hosting, and share their good wishes with him. Instead, they were confronted with devastating news that they had to communicate to his loved ones. Shuo’s parents, extended family, and friends have travelled from China – and from all over the world - to mourn along with the many people who were privileged to know him.
Shuo was born in Hunan, China. From a very young age, he exemplified the spirit of adventure. As a child, he moved to Beijing to attend school, living there with his cousin and her family for 9 years. He studied physics at Sichuan University, where he also developed a passion for environmental protection. Always curious about the world and other people, Shuo brought happiness to everyone he met, wherever he went.
He earned his PhD in physics from Kansas State University; his excellence as a research scientist inspired his department head to specifically recommend him for a position at IBM Aspera in the San Francisco Bay Area. He made breakthroughs in the areas of networking and data science, and his colleagues both admired and respected his brilliant mind, his self-discipline, and the high standards he set for himself. Shuo was an outstanding collaborator and was always eager to learn new skills in order to solve the problem at hand.
Shuo made everyone he met feel like a friend, and he was consistently kind and generous with his time, energy, and encouragement of others. He enjoyed ping pong, tennis, traveling, nature photography, Krav Maga, cooking, and many other pursuits – and he loved inviting others to join him.
His family is overwhelmed by everyone’s generous offers of support. They believe it is most fitting to honor Shuo’s memory through a scholarship fund. In this way, we recognize the great work Shuo would have continued to achieve, and the inspiration he provided to so many people.
Donations to this GoFundMe campaign will be contributed to the Dr. Shuo Zeng Scholarship (name pending), a charitable fund which we are in the process of establishing.
Dr. Shuo Zeng Scholarship
The Dr. Shuo Zeng Scholarship has been established to honor the life and work of Shuo Zeng, Phd. Dr. Zeng, the first person in his family to earn a PhD, came to the United States to complete his doctoral education at Kansas State University. His lifelong passion was education and continuous learning, and he consistently demonstrated a commitment to helping others learn. This scholarship also honors the Zeng family, who supported their son’s education and ensured his success through their sacrifice, support and love.
The recipient of the Dr. Shuo Zeng Scholarship will be an international graduate student of the highest caliber, with preference given to a scholar in the areas of Physics or Data Sciences. The student will be enrolled in a PhD or Master’s program within the College of Arts & Sciences and will demonstrate a commitment to academic study and/or research in the fields of physics, data science, or scientific programming, and applications thereof. Preference shall also be given to a student who demonstrates not only a high degree of academic achievement, but also a commitment to humanity through their service to others, as modeled by Dr. Zeng during his lifetime.
