The Vision:

Our hope for this campaign is to raise $1 million in scholarship funds for medical school students and to open free health clinic in memory of Shabaz Hussain. We want this fund to go towards helping people accomplish their dreams of becoming doctors and building a better world.  Scholarships will be awarded to aspiring medical students who have the same mission as Shabaz, to brighten the world by helping others, and creating a better future for more.

Shabaz's dream was to build a clinic to help those in need. With this campaign, we can fulfill his dream and help others fulfill their own.

The Story:

Shabaz Hussain was a beautiful soul who put others before himself.  A compassionate son, brother, and friend who brightened every room he entered.  If you ask anyone they'll refer to him as a sweet, kind, and caring person who had a unique ability to make anybody laugh.  If you walked into a room with Shabaz you would see the room light up with smiles and laughter. After his tragic and sudden death, many people remembered him by the constant smile he wore and spread, which got people through this hardship and time of grief.

He had the dream of becoming a doctor and did everything he could to accomplish it. He valued and aspired to always help others before he helped himself, and being a doctor was the path to the value.

An example of his good heart and righteousness was when one of Shabaz's friend's grandfather passed away.  Shabaz went to go visit this friend every day, offering emotional support in whatever way he could - including sometimes just sitting in silence so his friend wouldn't be alone, bringing over food, and of course, making him smile and laugh as always.  Shabaz carried that care and passion with him throughout his life.

Shabaz's life was tragically cut short on February 25th, 2014, when he was just 21 years old. He was a third year medical school student in Aruba. One evening, after enjoying a dinner out with his friends, he was struck in the head and suffered brain damage. He passed away less than a day later.

After his death, Aureus University School of Medicine announced a "Shabaz Syed Hussain Award" in his memory and awarded him an Honorary Doctorate Degree. Hundreds of people shared their memories of him via social media, sharing stories with #likeshabazwould, and hundreds more attended his funeral service. His life, though short, touched many others and never be forgotten.

The Need:

In 2018, the average medical school debt was $200,000.

According to the American Foundation for Sucide Prevention, medical students suffer from depression at rates 15 to 30 percent greater than the general population.

The high costs of medical school are particularly difficult for students with low-income backgrounds and contributes to the strain of medical school.

The goal of this campaign is to aid people in overcoming these barriers and going on to fulfill their dreams of becoming doctors to make this a better world.

Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Illayhi Rajioon." Eesha Khan

"RIP Shabaz Hussain, there was never a day that I saw you without a smile." Paige Sidhu

"Shabaz, I had the joy of being your teacher twice. You could always be counted on for a positive attitude and that infectious smile. I will be praying for your beautiful soul today." Aaron Kane

"Why is it that the people who care most often leave first. Today the world lost a special individual. He was the kind of person with enough selfless compassion put others before him and not relish on his own indulgences. There was never a moment not to laugh or smile literally ear to ear. He was the friend that everyone had. There was never a moment for him not to ensure a smile on the faces around him. He was a son, a brother, and nephew, friend, a joker, a beautiful human being. The rule of the doctor is to provide the utmost care for his patients. He might have still technically been a student, however he provided happiness to everyone around him. In that very sense, he was a doctor since the very beginning! Tragically the one who took his life will never fully comprehend the magnitude of which his unjustified and heartless actions robbed the world of. All in all. Shabaz Hussain was an amazing individual who touched the lives of many; and will forever leave a lasting impression on us. For that I thank him. Rest in peace brotha." Sheru Walia
