We all know that Rafael Casas, affectionately known as Raf, Rafa, and Junior, is a dreamer. He could have stayed in a lucrative job working as a design engineer - some might have argued that was the prudent financial decision. Even after eight long years of undergraduate and graduate studies, however, Raf still felt called to do more exploration, discovery, and innovation, always thinking about how he could help people, especially patients, by using his engineering skills.

 

You all know the story. Moving to the East Coast, getting a fellowship at NIH, and mustering up the courage to go strike up a conversation with a PhD student at a conference led to an opportunity to pursue a personal dream: getting a PhD. It was a long slog that required even more determination and self-motivation, patience and support from family and friends, and even more student loans. Five years later, Raf successfully defended his dissertation, earning the title of Dr. Rafael Casas. Beyond the new (sexy) title, completing his PhD included publishing 9 papers, designing, building and modifying 5 devices to support stroke patient rehab, and establishing a company to explore translating his research to products that serve stroke patients.

 

He officially graduates on May 14, 2022.

 

Big life achievements call for celebration and support from friends and family. For example, people have been setting up wedding registries since the 1900s. The tradition provided assurance that the new couple would start their lives together with all the essentials. And as the loving partner, I certainly feel like the completion of the PhD is the start of the next phase of our life together. So in that spirit, we created a PhD registry to set Raf up for success. With a long student loan battle ahead, in addition to a lifetime of sacrificing weekends and vacation for work instead of play and travel to make up for, we humbly ask for your support.

 

The $7,500 goal would help pay off at least one non-federal student loan and provide a little pocket cash for our travels.

Todos sabemos que Rafael Casas, conocido cariñosamente como Rafa y Junior, es un soñador. Cinco años más tarde, Rafa defendió con éxito su disertación, obteniendo el título de Dr. Rafael Casas. Más allá del nuevo (sexy) título, completar su doctorado incluyó la publicación de 9 artículos, el diseño, la construcción y la modificación de 5 dispositivos para apoyar la rehabilitación de pacientes con accidente cerebrovascular y el establecimiento de una empresa para explorar la traducción de su investigación en productos que sirvan a pacientes con accidente cerebrovascular. 

 

Se gradúa oficialmente el 14 de mayo de 2022. 

 

Los grandes logros de la vida requieren celebración y el apoyo de amigos y familiares. Por ejemplo, la gente ha estado organizando registros de bodas desde el siglo XX. La tradición aseguraba que la nueva pareja comenzaría su vida juntos con todo lo esencial. Y como pareja amorosa, ciertamente siento que la finalización del doctorado es el comienzo de la siguiente fase de nuestra vida juntos. Entonces, con ese espíritu, creamos un registro de doctorado para preparar a Rafael para el éxito. Con una gran deuda de préstamos estudiantiles por delante, y para compensar los fines de semana y vacaciones que sacrificó por trabajar, pedimos humildemente su apoyo. 

 

La meta de $7,500 ayudaría a pagar al menos un préstamo estudiantil no federal y proporcionaría un poco de dinero de bolsillo para un viaje.
