Funds will be used for an annual scholarship. This will be awarded to a Calaveras High School scholar/athlete that exemplifies the academic, athletic, and citizenship excellence that Matt did throughout his 36 years of life. Matt played 4 sports at CHS (football, soccer, basketball, and baseball), participated in 4H, and was a valedictorian of the class of 2004. He played football and baseball at Willamette University, where his academic excellence earned him a spot at USC’s medical school, Keck School of Medicine. Matt next traveled to Texas for an OB-Gyn residency at the University of Texas/Memorial Hermann hospital. He was elected as Chief Resident during his final year and offered a fellowship in his chosen specialty of Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) at UT. His research and clinical skills were highly respected by his peers locally and throughout the US. He had committed to a job at the University of Texas physicians group when, a month before completion of his fellowship, he was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. With his normal above-and-beyond approach to challenges, he fought it with everything available to him and his care team. Unfortunately, the cancer was too advanced and untreatable, and Matt died on March 28, 2022. A national research grant at the University of Texas is being named in his honor. We will memorialize him with this annual scholarship to help propel other CHS graduates to reach their potential.
