Dr. Mahesh Jhurani—beloved father, husband, brother, uncle, colleague and friend—transcended from us during the prime of his career after a valiant and courageous battle with cancer. His indomitable spirit and work as a physician providing quality medical care to traditionally underserved and marginalized communities was exceptional and served as an inspiration to everyone who knew him. His family, friends and colleagues are committed to ensuring his legacy and his life’s work inspires countless generations now and in the future.

Dr. Jhurani started his career in 1980 as a community physician providing the highest levels of clinical care to underserved communities in the impoverished urban communities of Mumbai, India. Independent of their race, gender, caste, socioeconomic status, religion, sexual orientation or underlying medical conditions, he worked with inexorable effort and unrelenting energy to ensure every patient he served received the clinical care they needed to live longer and live better. He was a perennial advocate for the populations he served and fought to promote health equity and justice despite the social, economic, political and personal challenges he endured.

Dr. Jhurani left India for the United States in 2003 to provide his family with the opportunities they needed to pursue their goals and aspirations. However, his commitment to providing quality medical care to underserved communities never wavered. He joined a community-focused progressive multi-specialty practice in New York City as a frontline primary care provider and resumed his work to empower patients and their families.

The communities Dr. Jhurani served suffered significant healthcare disparities that impacted their morbidity, mortality and quality of life. He quickly discerned the global nature of healthcare disparities affecting underserved communities and utilized his experience from India to educate patients and providers in his new practice. He once again continued providing the highest quality of medical care to patients independent of their background or preexisting medical history.

His unremitting dedication to every patient he served inspired a new community of colleagues and improved the lives of an expanding and diverse population of patients. Dr. Jhurani’s work was recognized by practice and community leaders for its transformative capacity, but accolades were never the source of his motivation. Those who had the privilege of working with him share similar memories of the passion for health equality and justice that defined his work and humbled them to do better.

In short, for the global communities struggling to live healthy lives despite overwhelming adversity Dr. Jhurani was a hero, and shall always remain one.

Dr. Jhurani’s family, friends and colleagues collectively lament his premature passing and recognize that his incredible life’s work was cut short. In his memory, we intend to establish a foundation with the goal of raising funds to support grassroots, community-based, healthcare organizations. The foundation’s nascent project involves a GoFundMe drive to raise funds for non-profit organizations that would embody his vision.
