Scholarship Fund to Celebrate the Legacy of Dr. Isadore Newman, Distinguished Professor Emeritus
(Dec. 3, 1942 – Oct. 3, 2018)

During his 35 year career at The University of Akron and his 10 years at Florida International University, Dr. Isadore Newman authored or co-authored over 150 articles, more than 200 presentations, 17 books or book chapters, and evaluated millions of dollars in grants. Dr. Newman also developed at least five unique approaches to doing research, the most widely recognized is his conception of the “Type VI Error.” (This is recognizing inconsistencies between the research question(s) and the evaluation procedures.)

As a member of the AERA and the MLR SIG for 49 years, Isadore developed the MLRV Journal and served as editor for 19 years, was Vice President and Program Chair several times, and helped to develop membership by encouraging colleagues and students to join and present.  He also worked with a colleague, Greg Marchant, to transform the MWERA newsletter into the Mid-Western Educational Researcher, which they co-edited for several years, and he served on numerous editorial boards including the Journal of Mixed Methods Research and the American Educational Research Journal, among others.

Isadore’s greatest impact and greatest source of professional pride was with the thousands of students he taught and with the over 500 students he guided through the dissertation process.  His guidance, patience, and constant encouragement helped even the most reluctant doctoral student through their research. If they didn’t contact him, he called them. Nobody was allowed to fall through the cracks.  He would ask for just a few pages, not polished, so they could discuss their ideas and progress. Some had a standing weekly appointment at Isadore’s office or house to keep on track and students got immediate feedback, within hours or a few days at the most, so they could continue to progress while the ideas were fresh. Many of these students credited Isadore with their professional lives and over the years they became valued colleagues and friends.

Recognition for his excellent contributions to the field has come from many sources.  Dr. Newman received the Outstanding Teacher Award from The University of Akron, Outstanding Alumnus Award from Southern Illinois University, Lifetime Achievement Award from the Eastern Educational Research Association, AERA Educational Researcher Reviewer Award, Recognition of Dedicated Service to Multiple Linear Regression/General Linear Model Special Interest Group, Outstanding Researcher from the Association of Teacher Educators, was an Invited Scholar at 11 universities and the Isadore Newman Endowed Research Fellow for the Center of Urban and Higher Education at The University of Akron was established as a tribute to him. He was also proud to be inducted into the prestigious Miami Beach High School Hall of Fame that recognizes lifetime achievement of outstanding alumnus who had far-reaching impact in their fields.

Perhaps Isadore Newman’s greatest accomplishment was a life well lived.  He was happily married for 52 years to Dr. Carole Newman and was very proud of his accomplished twin sons, Dr. David Newman and Matthew Newman.  He was known as a very intelligent, kind and good-natured man who had a million jokes, could talk to anyone about anything and he was loved by many.  His loss will be deeply felt by those who knew him.

We are working with AERA to establish a Travel Fund Award in Dr. Isadore Newman’s Honor. The scholarship fund will support graduate students and early career scholars’ travel to the AERA Annual Meeting. A minimum of $25,000 is needed to offer this award for 5 years. If we are able to raise more, we can extend the scholarship fund for a longer period of time.
