In May 2022, Dr. Hiroyuki "Hiro" Takenaka, an Assistant Project Scientist in the Ping Research Group within the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz passed away suddenly and tragically at his home in Santa Cruz.
Hiro was a very accomplished scientist in several fields of condensed matter and materials theory, (https://www.semanticscholar.org/author/H.-Takenaka/48334070 , https://yuanping.chemistry.ucsc.edu/group-members/dr-hiroyuki-takenaka ), with his most influential work on relaxor ferroelectrics published on Nature. His group members, friends, and colleagues were saddened and shocked by his untimely passing.
Hiro's 78-year old mother (Fusako) and elder brother (Shingo) are traveling from Tokyo to Santa Cruz from May 27 - June 4 to help settle his affairs and memorialize his life.
Members of the Ping Group, their family members, others within the UCSC and local AAPI community, and bay area Japanese are working together to help Hiro's family navigate their trip.
We hope to raise funds to support their trip, including accommodations, translation/interpretation services, and local travel expenses. All funds will be used to support the Takenaka family directly.
