On Tuesday, December 8, 2020, Dr. Elizabeth Marie Wolkowicz died from complications of Coronavirus at the age of 42.

Raised in a family full of educators, Dr. Wolkowicz was excited about learning from a young age and was a voracious reader throughout her life. Education was at the center of her life’s work and her personal goals, leading to a lifetime of educational pursuits, first receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Michigan State University, then a Masters of Arts in Special Education from Wayne State University, followed by a Specialist of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration from Eastern Michigan University. In 2018, she achieved her dream of becoming a Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership, also from Eastern Michigan University. Her doctoral dissertation, "A Case Study of High School Students Affected by Charter School Closure," addressed the long-term human impact of funding cuts and building closures on students, educators and communities.

Every single day, she channeled her passion for learning into her work with young people. A longtime urban educator in Southeastern Michigan, Dr. Wolkowicz dedicated her career to promoting literacy, leadership and educational opportunities for K-12 students across Detroit. For over a decade of her teaching career, she occupied myriad roles at Voyageur Academy, where she found a learning community united by a commitment to student success. She was especially passionate about mentoring and empowering girls to meet their potential and achieve their goals through education. At the time of her passing, Dr. Wolkowicz was serving her school community in the leadership role of Special Education Coordinator. She stood fiercely in support of all young people having the resources and the educational opportunities they deserve.

Dr. Elizabeth Wolkowicz's positive impact will resonate throughout the lives of her students, colleagues and school community for years to come.  The purpose of this fund is to honor her loving memory, her generous spirit, and her belief in the power of learning by supporting educational opportunities for the students she spent her final years serving at Voyageur Academy. Funds raised in her name will be gifted to Voyageur Academy to establish the Dr. Elizabeth Wolkowicz Memorial Fund, and stewarded by her dear friend and colleague, Dr. Rod Atkins, a member of the School Leadership Team at Voyageur Academy.
