On December 10, 2016, James suffered a bike crash in Carlsbad, CA when an inattentive driver pulled out in front of him. As a result of the crash, he broke his right collarbone, fractured his hip socket, broke his pelvis in two places, received a contusion to his lung, and suffered trauma to his head. The day of the crash, he went to two hospitals, as the first was not properly equipped to handle his injuries. He had surgery on his collarbone the following day (12/11), and on December 15th, moved to an acute inpatient rehab center in Encinitas, CA.
After spending two weeks in the hospital and rehab facility, James was released on Christmas Eve, just in time to spend the holiday with his family, much to the delight of Ava and Wyatt, and relief of James and Karie.
Even though he is home, we have had to purchase or rent several pieces of medical equipment to help him around the house, and to get around the outside world. James is a fairly unwilling user of the wheelchair, he's stubborn, but understands his limits fairly well these days.
He is making progress on walking and doing other physical household things, though the brain injury is the slowest to recover from.
It's now looking like he will be out of work for another 2 to 4 more weeks, on top of the 3 weeks he's already missed, depending on how the doctors feel he is progressing with his memory and cognitive improvement.
Any funds collected will be used to help cover the growing pile of bills from the various medical providers who gave James care. Two different Emergency Rooms, several ambulance rides, the collarbone surgery, and 14 days in a hospital. Along with the various devices, prescriptions, and other ancillary things.
It will also go towards the bills that are yet to come from the various therapies he will have each week: Physical, Occupational and Cognitive. Each of those is several times per week for the next 4 to 6 weeks.
It will also ease the financial strain and worry for us, and allow us to focus on getting James better first and foremost.
The doctors predict he will eventually be back to 100% on all counts, it will just take time. 8 to 10 months to be back to his "old self," for better or worse.
It's always hard to ask for help, but sometimes things happen that are just bigger than you are. We were hesitant to post this, but after some encouragement from close friends, we have decided to ask for help.
If you are able to help, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
Love always,
Karie, James, Ava and Wyatt
