Disaster Psychiatry Relief-Nepal
Tax deductible
Disaster Psychiatry Outreach (DPO) has launched a Nepal Mission to provide critical mental health care and resources to earthquake victims as well as trauma training to first responders.
“The people of Nepal have suffered severe trauma,” said Dr. Sander Koyfman, Board President of DPO, “And in order for them to recover, we need to care not only for their basic physical needs, but supporting that care through attending to acute mental and emotional needs as well. This will be the key to their resilience.”
DPO, through partnerships with local contacts and professionals, will soon deploy teams of volunteer psychiatrists and psychologists to offer one-on-one care, training for NGO staff on the ground, as well as materials and resources needed to facilitate long term care and support for the victims and their families.
“Disaster Psychiatry Outreach and our volunteers have been privileged to see the power of the human spirit and strength of the communities from New York City and Sri Lanka to Fukushima and Port-au-Prince,” said Koyfman said, “We are ready to assist and bring along what we have learned over the years, in hope of finding the ever shorter path to full recovery no matter the trauma.”
DPO and its team of volunteer medical professionals have been on the front lines for many of the significant crises of our day including 9/11, Hurricane Katrina, Sandy Hook, the Philippine Typhoon, the Ebola outbreak and many more. The group also offers an annual conference providing training in disaster psychiatry.
DPO is currently raising funds for this initiative and is seeking corporate sponsors to propel this forward.
