As many of you know, our dad, Robert was hospitalized right before Thanksgiving on 11/24/15. What you may not be aware of, is why. Dad was involved in a traumatic accident at home. No one else was home at the time, but thankfully, our brave, quick thinking and helpful neighbors rushed to his aide, called 911 and got dad the help he needed.
Dad was rushed to the trauma unit at Queen's Punchbowl hospital and was quickly and carefully stabilized. He was then rushed in to a 9.5 hour surgery. The first of many surgeries he would have to endure in his week long stay in Queens ICU.
During his stay in Queens ICU, and with every surgery, dad needed several blood transfusions.
Once Queens deemed him stable for transfer, dad was moved to Kaiser Moanalua hospital via ambulance. It was after his initial surgery on his second day there that we received the sad news. Dads doctor advised that it would be in dads best interest that his right hand and forearm be amputated.
As much as the Queens and Kaiser teams tried to save his hand and forearm, by that point, dad no longer had use of his right hand. Trying to save it any further would deem pointless as it would be a limp, functionless hand with a threat to infections if he unknowingly injured it. Also, trying to save the hand and arm would require extra surgeries and an even more extensive recovery time.
Dads right hand and forearm was amputated on 12/04/15.
Over the following week, dad started physical & occupational therapy and his recovery was starting to improve. He was finally discharged from the hospital on 12/13/15, but his story doesn't end there. He still has a long road ahead of him, healing and learning to adapt with just 1 hand. He will have home health care come in every other day to work with him, and he still has many follow up appointments. If all goes well....He can return to work by 2017.
Although we would ordinarily not ask for help, we realize this situation is beyond our means. The medical bills continue to grow even with him out of the hospital because of the many medications he needs to continue taking, and all the outpatient care he will receive.
We thank all of you in advance for taking the time to read this, and truly appreciate any help we are able to receive to ensure dad continues to get the care he needs.
