Apologies to anyone who has reached out and not heard back. We are in the hospital, which in itself is not unusual, but today marks 26 consecutive days since I called EMS and this chapter began.
Much has happened, but briefly, on May 6th at 2:15 AM I called EMS because she was showing her usual signs of an infection—chief among them, shaking. The rescue medics, in a moment of inconceivably poor decision-making, had her attempt to walk to a stretcher and, unsurprisingly, she fell and fractured her hip and shoulder.
What would have likely been one of our many trivial round trips to the hospital has now snowballed into a mountain of complications, largely caused by the hip fracture which required two surgeries. The latter resulted in significant blood loss, followed by several hours of critically low blood pressure, and yet-to-be-determined organ damage from oxygen deprivation. The good news: She’s responding to commands, opening her eyes, and her blood pressure has stabilized. There is hope for extubation today, and I’ll be better able to assess her condition.
While our medical expenses should be covered, our other bills are piling up as I have been unable to work, her retirement is depleted, and social security is not enough to cover expenses.
Thank you in advance if you are able to help.
