King5 Interview with Rhonda and Brandon

Every mother looks with anticipation for the day her fledgling baby bird will take flight out of the nest and onto their own life and adventures. Having done this twice before with older sons, Rhonda was excited to have her youngest son start that journey. Tragically, however, that would never happen. Just two days after turning 18, Brandon's motorcycle struck a car that pulled in front of him on the highway. His life was spared but with significant losses as he sustained a life altering traumatic brain injury. Today at 30 years old he is unable to live on his own. Simple decisions, impulses, paranoia and delusions make every day a struggle. Working as a paralegal Rhonda eventually had to quit her job to take care of him full time. He accuses everyone of stealing from him-- mom, family, friends and the banks which is why roommates or other caregivers have made that impossible. She found herself leaving work over and over to deal with the multiple issues. He has lost housing and has been arrested over 40 times for non violent offenses but deemed incompetent to stand trial. Although laws recently changed, this was a major factor in his decline. It's now a dire emergency as BOTH are homeless living in and out of motels and couch surfing when someone is gracious enough to invite them in. She can find a rental for herself but he can’t live there due to his history and TBI quirks. What is a mother to do? What would YOU do? Rhonda has tried everything: Medical teams, Brain Injury Alliance, the Amen Clinic, applications to group homes (not a candidate), diet, vitamins, naturopath, and Hippocrates health institute. NONE of these worked to turn his decline around. What she needs is a somewhat secluded home where Brandon can walk freely, build his rock gardens, and yell if he needs to. They need a place to heal, feel safe and thrive without worry or eviction.
With these funds depending on how much is received Rhonda will pay to keep a roof over both their heads…via a motel (temporary), rental (landlord and neighbors need to be understanding) or a down payment on a country place for them managed in an LLC (a girl can dream, right?)
