Hi! My name is Paree Pasi, and I am currently a junior at Central Bucks High School West, located in Doylestown. I am a proud American, Indian, and Hindu.
This past February I started the initiative to convince the Central Bucks School Board to recognize Diwali, the most auspicious day for Indians around the world, as an official school holiday. I wanted to bring a true change in my community, and make the CB school calendar representative of the changing demographic the United States is currently undergoing. Diwali, meaning the festival of lights, is one of the major holidays of the world, predominantly celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists. Although this change in the calendar wasn't easy, my persistence, drive, and over 1,500 supports who signed my petition on change.org, made this happen. With that being said, adding Diwali to the calendar was one of the 1st steps of many, I hope, of welcoming Indian culture into our beautiful and amazing Bucks County.
To further this initaitive, and as a member of Youth4unity, we decided to hold and host the very first Diwali Day of Doylestown, in collaboration with the newly formed group Desis of Doylestown! This event will be taking place at Burpee Park in Doylestown on November 7th, from 2 pm - 5 pm. Feel free to bring friends and family, dress in traditional Indian clothes, and prepare your mouths for spicy and flavorful food, as we come together during this joyous time and truly feel the warmth of the Indian community. Come join us, not just for fun, but to support and stand with your Desi neighbors, colleagues, and friends. Your kind donations will serve to provide food, decorations, and fun activities for this event.
Donations are deeply appreciated, non-tax deductible, and any remaining funds will be donated toward South Asian human rights work.
