Asking for help can be very hard, especially for someone who spends their life helping others.
Doug was recently diagnosed with Osteosarcoma a rare form of bone cancer with only around 3,000 cases per year. It has resulted in a lump on his left temple and a number of symptoms due to the tumor behind his eye, which is placing pressure on the brain. The amazing team at UofM Hospital has moved very fast in the treatment of the tumor, they have planned to start chemotherapy within the next few days in hopes to reduce the size of the tumor. After a few weeks of chemotherapy (3 times a week) they will be performing brain surgery to remove the tumor. Once the surgery is completed they plan to start chemotherapy again to ensure all the cancer is gone.
The specialists at UofM believe this is stemming from his cancer and radiation treatment as a young boy. As a child Doug had Retinoblastoma which resulted in having both eyes removed, one at 3 years old and the second at 5 years old. He spent a great deal of time as a child in a children's hospital in New York and was the first person in the world to have laser treatment used on the eyes.
Doug had been cancer free for 54 years prior to this news which he received last week. He has beat cancer already in his life and we know without a doubt he will do it again!! There are times in life when you have to put your pride aside and ask for help from friends and family. This is one of those times for Doug. Bills have already began to come in and multiple trips each week are being made to Ann Arbor which is about 45 min each way. Doug will be left with a great deal of expenses between the deductibles, co-insurances, co-pays, gas and other expenses over the next several months as he undergoes treatment. Doug would love your kind words, prayers, and support in any way to get through this difficult time. We have had some questions as to options to help financially so we felt this would give the opportunity regardless of where people are located. Please do not feel obligated to donate, Doug would be happy just knowing you have taken a moment to say a prayer or to leave a get well message on his Facebook!!
Doug will overcome cancer and have many years ahead of him cancer free once again!!
