Doug Hughes is the best guy we know — a great dad, husband, son, sibling, cousin, uncle, nephew,
friend, coworker — we could go on and on. His fight with Glioblastoma has been impressive and
ongoing. Please help us support Doug, Kate, Juniper and Lucas.
When the twins were born in May of 2018, the Hughes family became more complete. There were lots
of sleepless nights, dirty diapers, and loads of laundry. But life was moving forward.
Until the headaches started. It was a few days after Christmas and Doug had a headache. A rare
occurrence that would quickly be a regular one. After a month he started going to see some doctors.
Surely he was just over tired Surely it must be migraines.
Suddenly he was in the emergency room at Strong being scanned. It’s now February of 2019.
And there it was, about the size of a lime. A tumor and some fluid and who knows what else. It was
quickly removed. Chemo and radiation were scheduled and the worst news was delivered.
Stage 4 brain cancer. Glioblastoma. With an average lifespan of 18 months.
Everything and then some has been thrown at this beast. An additional 12 rounds of monthly chemo.
The wearable Optune device. An additional surgery, two clinical trials in Boston, and even more drugs.
But Glioblastoma doesn’t care that you have a young family and dreams of seeing them grow. All it
knows is how to grow and how to evade all available treatments.
To date, Doug has outlived 95% of glioblastoma patients. He will see his children turn 4 at the end of the
month. But the future is not promised to anyone, and certainly not someone with a terminal illness.
The family is grateful for all of the donations of money, time, food, and love. Having support during
difficult times is so important.
