Doug is a husband and father of three. He is the primary source of income for his family and prides himself on his work ethic and well-done job. Doug enjoyed working with his hands and installing systems. So, when Doug joined a local union in 2004, he found his calling. And made a prosperous living for his family. In 2012 he was in a dirt bike accident that caused him to become paralyzed. His relentless attitude brought him out of the hospital and back to work in 2016. His spirits soared with his independence. He and his family found a new normal and have been making extraordinary things happen over the past 6 years. Unfortunately, he has suffered some medical conditions over the years from being in his wheelchair for many hours. His shoulders have taken a physical beating from wheeling himself, and he has to undergo daily therapy from his legs remaining at a 90-degree angle all day. A lot of this could be prevented with the use of a wheelchair that can stand him up and electrically drive him. He was fortunate to get the chair- but his vehicle cannot support the transportation of this chair due to its weight. Currently, Doug's truck uses a lift that picks up his chair, puts it in the back of his truck, and returns it to the driver's door when he parks to transfer. The lift can't pick up the new chair. Our hope is to raise enough funds to get Doug a vehicle that can allow him the ability to use the chair to its full potential. With a conversion van, he would reduce chair transfers, be able to stand at work, and stop using his shoulders to wheel himself. All this will create more independence, a better lifestyle and most importantly, a longer life expectancy. Please help us by sharing his story or donating- No donation is too small and will be greatly appreciated by the Hocker family.
