Join us in raising money to help the Golden family during Doug's recovery.
Doug's Story
On Friday June 4th, Doug fell out of a tree while doing some trimming. Some neighbors saw him fall and were able to respond quickly and call an ambulance. Doug was taken to the hospital and put in the ICU. He obtained fractures in some vertebrae in his lower spine, a fracture in one of his ribs, a complete fracture in his C5 vertebra that crushed his spinal cord, and a small (subdural) brain bleed with a concussion. Thankfully the brain bleed has been determined to heal on its own, and he is alive and stable.
On Saturday June 5th, he underwent surgery in order to remove a blown out disk between C5 and C6 vertebrae and used grafted bone to fuse the C5 and C6 vertebrae together. The surgery was successful, but we also learned that because of the injury to his spinal cord, Doug has no feeling below the fracture at his chest and has limited mobility.
Doug has since moved to the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska for physical and occupational therapy.
About Doug
Everyone that knows Doug, knows that he is a great guy! He has a vibrant personality and a contagious laugh. He has had a positive and determined mindset since the accident, which is truly a testament to the type of person Doug is. Passionate about cycling and a RAGBRAI veteran, Doug is determined to heal so that he may cycle again one day in whatever capacity he is able.
Doug can often be found helping others out, whether is family, church, or community. It is an honor to be able to step up and return the favor for Doug as him and his family go through this difficult time.
Recovery Fund
As Doug and his family step into this long journey of recovery they will have to make many updates in their life to accommodate their new normal. Two of which will be the purchases of a specialized wheelchair and a wheelchair accessible vehicle.
We are reaching out to our community and beyond to raise money for these costs. If you find yourself asking, 'How can I help?' donating to this Gofundme is the best way to support Doug and the Golden's at this time. We will be launching some additional fundraisers through out the year, so please stay tuned!
Thank you for reading and keeping the Golden's in your prayers.
