The Douglas J. Falconer Scholarship Fund:
Awards represent the continuing embodiment of some of what our friend and colleague Douglas John represented in his life. It’s a gesture, of encouragement for recognized qualities and merit, honoring dedication, and achievement.
Doug’s positivity and attitude toward other efforts to excel are acknowledged by the two awards described below. He remained open to helping younger people advance through his own personal experience, struggles, success, maturity, generosity, and view on connectivity.
1. Ottawa GG’s Varsity Athletic Scholarship. the Ottawa GG’s Football 1881 Club, presents “The Doug Falconer GG’s Scholarship” presented to a Kingston and Area Athlete to attend Ottawa University Varsity Sports.
2. KCFF Award of Excellence in Film. the Kingston Canadian Film Festival present “The Douglas J. Falconer Award of Excellence in Film” to be presented annually to a principal actor, movie producer, director or other category selected each year the festival is hosted.
All proceeds donated to these scholarships will cover the annual costs of the cash awards. Over time this fund will grow and contribute to young people in either field that display the same drive and dedication Doug had to whatever he took on in life.
July 25th, 2021, we lost a great one in D.J. Falconer. Doug was born in Calgary Alberta and his dependent days led him to several military bases with his family. His dad Don was a miliary man, served in World War 11 and a Korean veteran. In the early 70’s Doug lived at CFB Kingston and attended LaSalle Secondary and St. Lawrence College. He went on to attend Ottawa University and played football for the GG’s. In 1975 his team went undefeated and won the CIAU championship. Doug was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts and went on to a successful football career in the CFL and in 1976 he won a Grey Cup with the Ottawa Rough Riders. We all remember the Hail Mary Pass to wide receiver Tony Gabriel from the legend quarterback Tom Clements.
In 1981 Doug moved to Los Angeles California to pursue a career in the movie business. Doug started acting and moved further into the movie producing business and eventually created Falconer Pictures. In 2016 he moved back to Ottawa Canada and continued his movie business.
Doug was building great success in the movie business producing films like “FORSAKEN” starring Kiefer and Donald Sutherland, “Daughter of the Wolf” staring Richard Dreyfuss and his last film 2021 “Dangerous” starring Scott Eastwood and local Kingstonian Brock Morgan. Doug had the pleasure of working with Tommy Lee Jones in a movie he produced “Wander”. In the fall of 2021, he moved to Kingston and continued his work on numerous movie deals. Doug’s career was on the rise until that fateful day he suffered a massive heart attack. Doug was 69 years old.
