What does it mean to have the BRCA 1 gene mutation? For me, it has been like waiting for the other shoe to drop. Having this mutation puts one at 45%-85% increased risk of developing breast cancer, and a 10-46% increased risk for fallopian tube and ovarian cancer. For me, this has meant Mammograms with U/S every year (sometimes twice yearly) and MRI’s yearly. I was blessed to have my babies, breastfeed them and watch them start to grow. Now, while aesthetic, and a “part of me,” my breasts are more likely to cause harm (cancer). A double mastectomy is not entered into lightly, but is the best option for me at this time in my life. How can you help me? MOST important, get familiar with YOUR breasts. Get checked out by a medical professional as recommended. Talk about these things with your friends and family so the conversation is easier. As a mom, nurse, midwife, and women’s health practitioner somehow I am shocked to see how much this will cost me. With “good insurance” and a fantastic career I will miss 4 weeks of work, and take on a mountain of debt. Any contributions would be placed directly towards, hospital bills (Orlando Health), amazing breast surgeon (Kay Shawchuck), Reconstruction Specialist (Dr. Deepa Nadu), Anesthesiologist/ CRNA’s and recovery time. Thank you for your kindness and support.
