Double Lung Transplant for Joginder Nijjar

My name is Nimrata and I am Joginder’s younger sister. Joe is a 32-year-old grandson, son, brother, uncle, friend and much more. He has a kind heart with lots of love to share and laughter that fills the room.

 

In 2020, after struggling with fatigue, shortness of breath and multiple tests, Joe was diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD). ILD is a condition where the lungs become inflamed and permanently scarred, and breathing becomes increasingly difficult. Less than 200,000 people a year are diagnosed, affecting people who are much older and rare in people under 50.

 

Currently, Joe is undergoing treatment with both Kaiser and Stanford Medical. His lungs are performing at 22% capacity. Joe has been put on oxygen full-time as his condition continues to weaken and as he awaits a double lung transplant.

 

The good news is that he is a perfect candidate for the transplant! On Friday, March 25th, we received the news that they placed him on the list. Now, we are anxiously waiting for “the call” that will save his life.

 

Post-surgery, Joe will be in the ICU on a ventilator for several days. Once out of the ICU, he will remain in the hospital for another few weeks until he is strong enough to leave. To prevent organ rejection, Joe will need to stay close to the Stanford Transplant Center, away from home, for three months of close monitoring. Joe will need to take anti-rejection medication for the rest of his life and have follow-up visits at Stanford Medical every one to three months.

 

A double lung transplant is a miracle and a blessing; however, the costs associated with this will be difficult. Some of the costs of pre and post-transplant are oxygen, medical bills, travel, housing/living expenses, and medicine for life that are not covered fully by insurance
