Double Lung Transplant: Chris Needs Your Help

Fighting to Live, One Breath at a Time

In 2021, Chris O’Hanlon was diagnosed with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a devastating disease that severely impacts lung function. By December 2024, his condition had progressed to the point that he required a double lung transplant—a life-saving but incredibly difficult procedure.

Chris’s journey has been anything but easy. Chris endured many post-surgery complications resulting in a tracheotomy following ventilator removal, and a grueling 31-day stay in the ICU at UNMC. Most critically, Chris developed a severe and aggressive lung infection, making his recovery even more challenging.

After leaving UNMC, Chris was transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Center, where he worked to regain strength while his wife, Deb, learned the complex home medical care he now requires.

Thanks to the unwavering support of family and friends, Chris is now home, but his battle is far from over. His daily routine consists of a multitude of medical treatments, and—most critically—three daily infusions of powerful antibiotics to fight the infection in his lungs.

The Challenge:

Medicare does not cover these life-saving antibiotic infusions under prescription drug costs. Chris and Deb must pay $4,500 out of pocket every week to continue treatment. While the best-case scenario is for these infusions to end by May, doctors have warned it could take up to a year.
