Dottie & Eleanor's Adoption Story

I NEED YOUR HELP. When I was a few months old, I was abandoned by my birth mother in South Korea. I was covered with sores, weighed only seven pounds and I believe my mother left me in the care of the Holt orphanage (though I’ll never know for sure) in the hope I wouldn’t die of malnutrition. Thirty nine years later, I returned to Korea to adopt my now 18-year old daughter, Eleanor, from Holt.

The story of being a Korean adoptee raising an adopted Korean child is one that hasn’t been told often. It's time for me to share my experience via text, video, photos and even virtual reality.

I never found my birth parents. Eleanor wants very much to find hers. I have spent the last 35 years working high-pressure jobs and the last 18 years raising a family as the primary breadwinner.  I feel my mortality and want very much to tell my story. But more importantly, I want to help Eleanor piece together her own story—something that eluded me and left me with years of heartache and unanswered questions.

The truth is, friends, this project will be costly to create. It will require international travel. I’d also like to bring a videographer along to document our travels. I know many of you are financially strapped. If I could somehow juggle a full-time job and complete this project, I wouldn’t ask for help. I will continue to work on ad/marketing/writing projects. I just need the extra support to provide the resources this project deserves. If you can’t help financially, a note of support would also be welcome. This is the story I was born to tell. Help me do this for Eleanor and for any persons (not just adoptees) who’ve ever hungered to find their places in this world.

If you'd like to receive a detailed budget for this project, please leave a note here and I'd be happy to share it. The funds will go toward travel, video production, website build, blog and other creative assets. I anticipate this project will take about 18 months to complete.
