13 years ago, our lives changed forever.
My little brother Luke was diagnosed with a large brain tumour — Pilocytic Astrocytoma. Our world was turned upside down, and it quickly became the most frightening and uncertain time we’ve ever faced as a family.
Luke was a normal, happy 6-year-old, but things began to change. He was having headaches, nausea, and mood swings, which were often dismissed as primary school jitters. As things worsened, he began being sick and suffering from severe headaches, but neurological tests showed nothing remarkable.
My mum (Fay) came across The Brain Tumour Charity’s HeadSmart campaign, which highlights the symptoms of brain tumours — and everything started to make sense.
Using the HeadSmart campaign symptom checker my mum felt empowered and asked the GP for Luke to be referred to the hospital for a MRI, which confirmed our worst fears.
Luke was immediately transferred to St George’s Hospital in London.
3 days later on 24th September 2013, Luke underwent a 10-hour operation to remove the tumour.
Luke has recovered remarkably well and through his hard work and determination he has achieved fantastic results throughout his school and college exams and is now pursuing his career in IT.
During this incredibly difficult time, The Brain Tumour Charity supported our family in ways we will never forget. They didn’t just provide information — they gave us hope. From family days that allowed us to make special memories, to connecting us with others going through similar experiences, their support meant everything.
Now, 13 years on, I want to give something back. Alongside my friends Jack and Henry, we’re raising money for The Brain Tumour Charity — for all families embarking on this long journey battling brain tumours.
Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world's leading specialist funder of brain tumour research, dedicated to saving and improving lives. They focus on accelerating cures, driving earlier diagnosis through awareness campaigns like HeadSmart and Better Safe Than Tumour, and providing free support services to patients and families.
Thank you for reading our story. Any donation, big or small will be much appreciated and will help provide support, hope, and strength to families who need it most and finding a cure for Brain Tumours. ❤️
