On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, Dorina Vaccaroni was involved in a cycling accident while training for Race Across America (RAAM). Her injuries included a fractured left tibia and related skin tissue, leg & knee damage. The prognosis is ok but required a long road back. Our goal is to get her back for full time training for RAAM, related other ultracycling races, and teaching fencing!
Dorina is from Italy, spending 3 months out of the year in Asiago, the rest here in Marin training for cycling events, and teaching fencing at the Marin Fencing Academy. Unlike Italy, medical care here is very expensive, and her lack of insurance is a challenge. Some of us have chipped in to help get x-rays, some medical care, and some ancillary things to get her back in partial training. Her leg will require extensive therapy to get her back and training fast.
Since none of us have deep pockets, and after talking with Dorina, we decided to setup this GoFundMe page to see if networked family and friends would be able to provide some additional level of financial support. Since time is of the essence, I am opening this fundraiser for a short 7 days. We are setting up physical therapy appointments ASAP. Any assistance at all is appreciated. Traveling back to Italy, where medical care is provided is an option, but one that would be detrimental to so many.
For those that do not know Dorina, she is a 5-time Olympian, winner of the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in fencing (for Italy). She was the former solo women’s world champion. Now-a-days she is one of the top female long-distance cyclists in the world, as well as a Fencing Maestra (Master) at MFA. She has been an inspiration to thousands of athletes around the world, an icon in Italy, and locally admired by the hundreds of fencing students she has. I’m hoping we can collectively help get her healed quickly, and back in the saddle again.
Upon completion, all receipts of money used will be provided to those that donated.
