Help Us Reach the National Math Convention!

We are the Doral Academy Math Club, a Miami-based chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, the nationwide math honor society. Every school year, we take our 100+ student club to four regional, four statewide, and one nationwide competition, and compete in countless more mail-in contests. Along with our dedicated and hardworking sponsors, our goals are:
- Furthering the education of those around us
- Teaching our younger students how to compete honorably and honestly
- And of course, winning
So far, we’ve been pretty good at that last one. Our school has placed 3rd in both states and nationals. Other notable achievements of our students from the past three years include:
-1st in the nation in Circles, Perimeters, Area, and Volume
-1st in the nation in Alpha Chalk Talk (giving a speech - about math!)
-1st in the state in Geometry
-1st in the state in Calculus
-1st in the state in Statistics (twice)
-2nd in the nation in Logs and Exponents
-3rd in the nation in Theta Applications (a lot of geometry- and algebra-related word problems)
-3rd in the nation in Geometry
Our teams have placed 3rd in the nation twice, won the state twice (in Geometry and Precalculus), and gotten first in the region countless times.
Our math club has developed some of the best and brightest students in the nation. Our seniors in the class of 2019 have been accepted into:
•Harvard
•Stanford
•Massachusetts Institute of Technology
•Princeton
•Carnegie Mellon
•Cornell
•Yale
•University of Chicago
•Johns Hopkins
•University of Miami
As well as many other schools in Florida, including the University of Florida, Florida State University, and the University of Central Florida.
Our club encompasses more than math, we also have a dedicated group of artists who pour their time, energy, and sanity into making us a beautiful scrapbook, which is always recognized as one of the best at the state convention every year.

Testimonials:
Raul Valle - “I find that the Math Club has become a very major part of my life; not only has the club contributed to my academic success, but it has also helped me grow as an individual, with a wonderful community that supports every other member. My exposure to the club is what first revolutionized my appreciation for competition, and ultimately drives me to pursue a greater understanding of everything I perceive. At my first national competition is where I learned that there are students competing at an extremely high level, earning national titles and awards; to try to prove my own knowledge, and to induce this same feeling of excitement upon the younger club members is the primary reason that I’d like to attend Nationals with the rest of the club. Nationals is an opportunity for every student to express their prowess in mathematics and aim towards the excellence that they deserve!”
But all of this doesn’t mean anything if we can’t get to competitions, and for that, we need your need help! The 2019 Nationals convention is in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 14-19. We are taking 20 students, who each need to pay $600 for airfare, round trip, and $575 for registration. Last year, we were unable to go, partially because we didn’t have enough money to pay (and also due to scheduling conflicts caused by Hurricane Irma).
We are currently the youngest club succeeding at this level in the state of Florida, and indeed, in the nation. In only five years, we have gone from nothing to actively competing against the best schools in the state, sometimes beating them. This level usually takes a decade or more to reach, and we can only maintain it by going to such challenging competitions as Mu Alpha Theta Nationals.

Our goal is $12,000, which would make this competition affordable for our students, over 50% of which are on free or reduced lunch, and most of which are first or second generation immigrants.
All donations will go directly to the Doral Academy Mu Alpha Theta Chapter.
All donors who donate more than $250, will have the option to receive a tax refundable receipt sent by mail.
