On Wednesday, October 26, 2016, Simon Yeung, the owner of Donut King (10731 KY44 in Mount Washington), was seriously injured when he was shot in the head outside his business.
Donut King is a family-owned business that has been serving the Mount Washington community for over 17 years. Simon would come in every evening around midnight to start preparing fresh donuts for his customers . His wife would join him soon after to help run the shop. His two children, Jonathan and Jennifer, help run the shop too. Simon is a proud immigrant to the United States from Vietnam, and he worked hard seven days a week to brighten up the mornings of families and businesses across Bullitt County.
From Jonathan, his son: "My dad is the picture of the American dream. He came to America with my pregnant mom and worked seven days a week to provide for his family. In New York, he was a truck driver. I could not imagine a better role model or father. He sacrificed so that we could live a life that he never could. He was always loyal, generous, and taught us that there is a lot of dignity in hardwork, teaching us by his example what is right and what is wrong. My dad works very hard and always maintained a routine schedule, even after becoming the manager of Donut King in 1999. When relatives call, they would joke and say it's either time for him to make donuts, or time for him to work out.My dad uses an app called wechat to talk to friends and family overseas and he would always say good morning everyday to them. My family used to joke that he used the app too much, but now everyone misses his voice. Perhaps what I miss most at this time is my father's corny sense of humor and his smile. He is a kid at heart. The smallest things made him happy."
Simon was in serious condition as of Thursday, and he is still not conscious from the shooting. The family expects that he may be blind in one eye and that he will likely suffer brain injuries. His recovery will be long and difficult, and the future of Donut King is uncertain.
I created this GoFundMe page as a family friend. 100% of the proceeds will go to covering Simon's medical bills and help the family on the long road to recovery. Any amount will help. Imagine what you would pay for a dozen (no-calorie, but heart-filled) donuts. We are grateful for everyone's generous thoughts and prayers.
